Best available: Players to watch so far this spring
The 2023-24 transfer portal cycle is on pace to be another record-setting one, with 2,300 scholarship college football players already in the portal at the FBS level. So far, more than 1,400 have announced commitments as the 14-day spring transfer window continues from April 16-30.
Which big names do you need to know ahead of the portal deadline? In an effort to help you keep track of who’s going where and which top transfers are still on the market, The Athletic ranks the best available players in the portal.

Jermayne Lole commits to Oklahoma
(Photo: Jamie Rhodes / USA Today)
Good pickup for Oklahoma tonight: Louisville transfer DL Jermayne Lole has committed to the Sooners. He's a 6-foot-3, 310-pound veteran defensive tackle who brings more than 1,800 career snaps to the table from his time at UL and Arizona State. Lole has dealt with injuries and missed nearly the entire 2022 season with an elbow injury, but if he can stay healthy this season he'll certainly help strengthen the Sooners' defensive front.

Big pick up for Colorado
Ohio State transfer running back Dallan Hayden has committed to Colorado. He's going to be an important pickup for the Buffs.
Hayden rushed for 663 yards and six touchdowns over two seasons with the Buckeyes, including three 100-yard performances as a freshman, but was stuck behind two studs on the depth chart this spring.
With Colorado only returning Dylan Edwards and Sy'Veon Wilkerson at the running back position, Hayden will have an opportunity to earn a significant workload and give CU's offense the kind of pass-run balance it clearly lacked in 2023 when the team produced an FBS-low 827 rushing yards.
Texas focusing on defensive line help
(Photo: Kirby Lee / USA Today)
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged after the Longhorns’ spring game on Saturday that he has a clear need with his spring portal shopping.
“The depth on the defensive line is not where we need it to be,” Sarkisian said, “and so hopefully we can address that. That’s a bit concerning.”
Texas picked up a commitment on Monday from Arizona transfer Bill Norton, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle who started at nose for the Wildcats last season after transferring in from Georgia. New Texas co-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen came over from Arizona, so Norton’s pledge was no surprise.
The big get Sark is still chasing would be UCLA DT Jay Toia. Texas hosted him and his younger brother George at its spring game and appears to be in great shape in this recruitment. Toia is currently No. 7 in The Athletic's best available rankings.
Lorando 'Snaxx' Johnson back in portal
Arkansas CB Lorando "Snaxx" Johnson has re-entered the transfer portal. The former Baylor transfer started all 12 games last season for the Razorbacks and recorded 29 tackles, four TFLs, five pass breakups and an interception that he returned for a pick-six. Arkansas brought in Tennessee transfer Doneiko Slaughter this offseason and he'd been competing with Johnson at the nickel spot this spring.
Henry Parrish Jr. headed back to Ole Miss

Former Miami leading rusher Henry Parrish Jr. announced on Twitter on Monday he's headed back to Ole Miss for one last dance. Parrish ran for 625 yards and six touchdowns last season and 1,241 yards and 10 touchdowns on 230 carries in his two years in Coral Gables after transferring from Ole Miss. He was recruited by former Miami assistant Kevin Smith to Ole Miss and then followed him to the Hurricanes. Smith rejoined Lane Kiffin's staff in Oxford in 2023.
Miami's Jared Harrison-Hunte expected to enter portal
Miami is expecting starting defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte, a sixth-year senior with 22 career starts, to enter the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. The Hurricanes picked up two defensive tackle transfers with plenty of starting experience in December in C.J. Clark (N.C. State) and Marley Cook (Middle Tennessee State) and signed seven defensive linemen in the 2024 class including five-star Justin Scott from Chicago.
Harrison-Hunte’s expected departure leaves Miami under the 85-player scholarship limit. Second-year linebacker Kaleb Spencer, backup quarterback Jacurri Brown, reserve running back TreVonte Citizen, reserve offensive lineman Logan Sagapolu and edge rusher Nyjalik Kelly, a three-game starter in two seasons, have all entered the transfer portal since the end of the spring. A few more departures are expected as Miami looks to add depth at running back, defensive line, linebacker and defensive back.

Miami to host RB Damien Martinez
(Photo: Soobum Im-USA Today)
Miami is set to host former Oregon State running back Damien Martinez – one of the top available in the transfer portal – Thursday as his tour for a potential landing spot continues.
Martinez, who ran for 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns last fall, has stopped by Arizona and Mississippi State and is expected to decide after his trip to Coral Gables, a source confirmed to The Athletic.
“Man, Mario has been persistent,” Martinez told AthlonSports. “The whole staff has been making me and my family feel like family even before the visit. As everyone has seen, they came down two times before I went there.”
Martinez told Athlon he thinks he fits Arizona’s scheme easier than Mississippi State’s, but the Bulldogs “create bigger run lanes given the fact they run a spread offense.”
Miami has five scholarship running backs on the roster, but sophom*ore Mark Fletcher and redshirt sophom*ore Ajay Allen – the two most experienced backs on the team – missed the spring recovering from injury.
Wisconsin adds depth to O-line
Wisconsin adds some needed depth on the offensive line with former Vanderbilt lineman Leyton Nelson announcing his commitment from the portal. Nelson played 26 snaps at tackle last season under current Badgers line coach AJ Blazek at Vandy.
Another Colorado departure
Colorado redshirt freshman DB Adam Hopkins entering the transfer portal this morning means that, by my count, the Buffaloes are at 72 scholarship players for their 2024 roster. Deion Sanders and his staff can go pick up at least 10 more transfers over the next few weeks to fill out their remaining needs. For the second year in a row, this team is going to have more newcomers than returning scholarship players entering the season.
GO FURTHERDeion Sanders on transfers leaving Colorado: ‘What are we losing?’Florida State coming off the sideline
(Jim Dedmon / USA Today)
In January, the NCAA penalized Florida State for NIL violations after offensive coordinator Alex Atkins facilitated impermissible contact between transfer visitor Amarius Mims and the school’s now-former collective in April 2022 and the collective offered Mims $15,000 a month.
The terms of the negotiated resolution included this punishment: Florida State was prohibited from communicating with transfer recruits from April 15-21. That meant the Seminoles were required to sit out the first week of the spring portal window.
We haven’t seen too many big names come off the board yet, so I don’t think this ended up being a big setback for Mike Norvell and his staff other than missing out on the first weekend of official visits. It’ll be interesting to see who they prioritize as they quickly catch up. Like most contenders, they could use help on the defensive and offensive lines and possibly at wide receiver.
Wolverines need a WR, but what about QB?
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — More than once this spring, Fredrick Moore felt his legs burning as he jogged back to the huddle and lined up for another rep, knowing there wasn’t anyone waiting to take his place.
Moore and the rest of Michigan’s wide receivers didn’t take many plays off this spring, mostly because they didn’t have a choice. Michigan’s depth took a hit with starters Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson moving on to the NFL and several other players entering the transfer portal, leaving Moore and the remaining wide receivers to shoulder a heavy load.

What Graham Nicholson adds to Alabama
(Photo: Lon Horwedel / USA Today)
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama football added its second player via the spring transfer window on Sunday night when Miami (Ohio) kicker Graham Nicholson announced his commitment via his X account. Nicholson won the 2023 Lou Groza Award for the nation’s best kicker, connecting on 27 of 28 field goal attempts, including 25 straight, which set an NCAA record.
Nicholson, who has one year of eligibility remaining, is set to replace outgoing kicker and all-time NCAA scoring leader Will Reichard and stabilizes arguably the biggest weakness on Alabama’s roster exiting spring practice.

Alabama adds kicker
Alabama had picked up a commitment from Miami (Ohio) transfer kicker Graham Nicholson, the 2023 Lou Groza Award winner as college football’s best kicker. Nicholson made 27 of 28 field goals last season, including 25 in a row, for the MAC champs and gets a chance to replace All-American Will Reichard, who broke the NCAA’s all-time scoring record.
Philip Blidi commits to Auburn
Indiana transfer DL Philip Blidi has committed to Auburn. The 6-foot-3, 295-pound defensive tackle spent three years at Texas Tech before moving on to Indiana and had a solid season with the Hoosiers as an 11-game stater. Blidi hit the portal before the spring window opened and got a lot of attention from schools like LSU, Washington and Oklahoma but opted to join the Tigers. Hugh Freeze has added 10 transfers going into Year 2 with more coming soon.
Busy day continues for Colorado
Another good get for Colorado today: Ohio DT Rayyan Buell has committed to the Buffs. Buell was a third-team All-MAC selection last season after producing 12.5 TFLs and 4.5 sacks. That’s three pledges so far from a productive official visit weekend for Deion Sanders and his staff.
Iowa adds OL commit
Iowa picked a commitment from North Dakota offensive lineman Cade Borud, who started every game at center as a redshirt freshman for the Fightin’ Hawks. The 6-foot-2, 315-pounder hails from Pleasant Hill, Iowa, just southeast of Des Moines. For the first semester, Borud is a preferred walk-on, but with two senior centers ahead of him, Borud will have a chance to start in 2025.

Another addition for Colorado
Colorado has picked up another portal commitment from Texas transfer OL Payton Kirkland. The 6-foot-6, 366-pound lineman from Orlando did not appear in a game during his lone season with the Longhorns and gives Colorado a promising developmental lineman with four years of eligibility.
Branson Hickman commits to Oklahoma
Oklahoma has picked up a commitment off its spring game from SMU transfer center Branson Hickman. The three-year starter and All-AAC selection visited TCU and Arkansas but couldn’t turn down a good opportunity to become the Sooners’ starter at center with Andrew Raym off to the NFL and Troy Everett sidelined with a knee injury that required surgery. Hickman was No. 11 in our latest best available rankings.
Colorado lands Dayon Hayes from Pitt
Pitt transfer DE Dayon Hayes has committed to Colorado. Hayes was No. 16 in The Athletic's best available rankings and one of the top defensive ends currently in the portal. He led the Panthers with 44 pressures and 10.5 TFLs in 2023 but hit the portal after saying he felt the program wasn't in a position to "win now." He's joining a Colorado squad with a much more explosive offense and a real need for impact pass rushers.
