History of Astralon

It is common knowledge that Lumaya created her faithful herald, the Arbiter, to serve as Teleria's protector when she herself cannot intervene in mortal affairs. Less well known are the champions of the younger races, raised to immortality for their exploits, or the angelic spirits created to help the Arbiter fulfill his mission.

Astralon is one such creature. He was the winged bearer of Lumaya's word and the bearer of righteous wrath, whose name inspired terror in the hearts of the ungodly. As an emissary of the Arbiter, Astralon sought out heroes worthy of joining his cause over the centuries. As a strategist, he led mighty armies of war to combat the vile demons of Siroth and defend the young races.

Triumphant every time, he knew neither fear nor doubt, and his duty was all that gave him joy. Yet even an angel is powerless when his heart rebels against his mind. At the height of the Great Wars - a period of kingdom-shattering conflict between the forces of Darkness and Light millennia ago - Astralon's army came up against the legions of Countess Lix, the Mistress of the Plagues.

For months, the hosts engaged in a complex dance of maneuvers and ruses, with neither general gaining the upper hand over the other. Brutal skirmishes erupted on the bloody plains, and the demon countess taunted Astralon in missives that her imps sent her almost daily. Frustrated and impressed at the same time, Astralon engaged his warriors in pursuit and pushed deep into enemy territory.

He had foiled many traps with his cunning, fought many battles against overwhelming opponents, only to triumph once more. Lix, too, reluctantly began to respect her enemy and put her most powerful henchmen against him. To no avail. Driven by the will of their Strategos, the warriors of the Light proved stronger than any diabolical plans she concocted.

Astralon eventually cornered the legions commanded by Lix near the southern coast of Krokhan, and a decisive battle ensued. The two sides clashed fiercely, turning the tide of the war several times before Astralon himself launched the final attack designed to put an end to the Mistress of the Plagues once and for all.

Their vanguards clashed, and mighty warriors perished on both sides as Astralon and Lix crossed blades in the swirling melee. What happened between them is lost to legend, but it is known that the angel proved stronger and triumphed after a long duel, although he too suffered terrible wounds and could barely stand.

At this critical moment, Astralon couldn't bring himself to take his opponent's life. Horrified, he realized that he had grown to love the Countess over the months. Her devilish intelligence, her determination and strength, her disquieting beauty had struck a chord within him, and Astralon couldn't resist her. But he couldn't give in either, for he was a creature of Lumaya and it was his duty to protect the mortal realms.

And so Astralon forced his vanquished enemy to accept a new destiny, that of serving the Goddess as one of her Champions, even if Lix didn't want to at first. But he, too, could no longer serve as he had before. Recognizing his own weakness, Astralon relinquished his place at the Arbiter's side and implored him to bind his soul to a Champion's Shard.

It was the only way he could redeem himself and remain close to the creature he had grown to love. To this day, Astralon nurtures the vain hope of redeeming Lix, while she seeks to make him fall into the embrace of Darkness. Neither has succeeded in doing so for thousands of years, but their twisted relationship endures - a strange alliance of sin and piety that only the most powerful summoners can hope to rally to their cause.
