Dayton Daily News Aug. 19, 1988 0 Patience pays off as 12 hit $20 million jackpot CLEVELAND (AP) After five years of trying, a dozen workers at a suburban machine tools factory felt certain they would win big some day in the Ohio Lottery. On Thursday, they claimed a $20 million Super Lotto jackpot. "I figured sooner or later we'd get it," said Matt Goodlin, 48, of Mentor. Goodlin and his partners are shop workers at Kennametal Inc.
in Solon. Members of the group over the years had spent several thousand dollars to buy lottery tickets, Goodlin said. They bet $700 in January on a record $32 million "Super Lotto" drawing. Asked if he really believed that one day he and his pals would beat the game's more than 7 million-toone odds, Goodlin said, "Yeah, we did." This time, Goodlin: and his 11 coworkers each contributed $2 for 24 chances at the prize. One of their plays, selected randomly by the lottery's computer, turned up the winning combination in Wednesday's drawing: 12, 17, 25, 26, 32 and 36.
Goodlin and some of the others in his group went to work Thursday morning to announce their triumph. "They already knew by the time we got there. Somebody told them. Most of them were very happy," Goodlin said. The lottery will pay out the $20 million in 20 annual installments of $1 million.
After federal tax withholding, each of the 12 will get a yearly check for $66,666.67. Other winners are Thomas Robinette, Carmen Latessa, Jimmy Robins and Arthur Ehase, of Willoughby; Earl Dunlap, of Mentor; brothers Roger and Lawrence Quickel, of Madison; Robert Repas of Maple Heights; and Terrence Castilyn and Fred Bird of Painesville. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Priscilla Sexauer of Beavercreek, Cynthia Wright of Bellbrook; sister, Mary Lauver of Richfield, a granddaughter, Deborah Miller of Cleveland; grandson, Donald Wright of Bellbrook. VANCE, Merle, age 60, from Jonesville, VA, formerly of Dayton, passed away Wednesday, August 17, in Lee County Community Hospital. He was a retired machinist from General Motors, a member of the United Auto Workers Association, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a WWII veteran and he was of the Baptist faith. His surviviors are his wife, Betty Sue Giles Vance, of Jonesville, VA; his mother, Reva Vance of Dayton, OH; 1 brother, Gary Dean Vance of Centerville, OH; 3 sisters, Maxine Morris, Judy Vulcher and Joan Lipps, all of Dayton, OH.
Funeral services will be at 3 P.M. Saturday from the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Pennington Gap, VA with Rev. Bradley Ray Yeary officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Gardens at Woodway, VA. Visitation will be from 6 until 8:30 P.M.
Friday at the funeral home. Military honors and Masonic services will be held at the grave site.
