losses PageCI District releases CATO report EDUCATION: List details private schools that were once affiliated with the charter school By CRAIG JOHNSON Staff Writer VICTORVILLE CATO a public charter school improperly entered into agreements with a number of private schools many located far from the Victor Valley according to the Apple Valley Unified School District On Friday the district released lists of private schools affiliated with CATO that included those that charged tuition or taught religion It is against state education laws for public schools to affiliate with such private schools the Apple Valley school board said The Apple Valley district board cited the affiliations with private schools as one reason for deciding to revoke its sponsorship of CATO this week The revocation takes effect Feb 2 According to one list provided by the district CATO had 40 satellite schools at one time CATO received extra revenue from the state based on how many students were enrolled at satellite schools The charter school in turn shared the revenue with the satellite schools Recent legislation will make this practice of revenue sharing illegal starting Jan 1 Many of the satellite schools according to the district were already up-and-running private schools located in Los Angeles County cities such as Los Angeles Gardena Compton Carson Pomona Inglewood and Hawthorne One satellite school Barstow Christian School was in the High Desert according to one list from the district Earlier this year Tom Cosgrove former chief executive officer and founder of CATO said the school had ceased working with the private schools and was concentrating on home schooling students current Chief Executive Officer Vgalene Gorsky said on Friday that the school will still try to press forward intent and our goal is to keep the school alive Gorsky said As a charter school CATO needs a school district to sponsor it Gorsky said CATO will attempt to find another district and
